Light My Fire Spork XM - Outdoor Gear Review

Introduction:

I got the chance to try the medium sized model, perfect for prepackaged hiking foods as it will reach the bottom of the bag without having to stick your hand in it! This was designed especially for freeze dried pouches with an 8 inch length.

One end is a spoon; the other end is a four tined fork with a saw tooth edge to use as a knife. Dishwasher safe, heat resistant and lightweight, this is ideal for camping, hiking or just picnicking. The XM model seems to be a perfect size as it is big enough to use for cooking and serving, yet small enough to use for eating. It won't harm nonstick cooking surfaces under normal usage.

Made of polycarbonate, this weighs in at .56 of an ounce so it packs light, but packs a punch in usability. Prior to this, I had a spoon/knife/fork combo made of metal that was kind of bulky but still better than trying to eat soup with your hands!

Just to give it a spin, we went on a 7 mile hike and stopped for lunch. The spoon end is great for soups and stews and the fork end works very well. The cutting edge leaves a bit to be desired and does somewhat get in the way. I could see that if you were not careful you might be able to cut yourself, so I would not suggest using it while heavily medicated.

I had our youngest, who is 8; try it at home on breakfast. He loved it! The fork end was great for cutting and picking up bites of pancakes and sausage, the spoon end was perfect for scrambled eggs-n-cheese. He gave it true thumbs up and I found he was asking later if he could use it again so I guess we will pick up one of the smaller models for him.

The XM model comes in four different colors. That is a great idea so we would never have to wonder which was whose. Cleaning was very easy, even the cheese wiped off easy.

Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Combo of items takes up less space
  • Easy to clean Durable
  • Great for eating, cooking or serving
Cons:
  • Heat resistant but don’t leave it on the edge on the pan, it WILL melt.
  • Cutting edge could hurt you if you are not careful.
  • You need two if you need a fork and spoon at the same time.
Bottom-Line:

I will get more of these, but I probably will get the smaller ones as I do a lot of cooking on the trail and camping. Even if we picnic we still tend to stay away from freeze dried items. This size is made for that. This one will make a great cooking, serving size in my opinion. Having one item for all three functions is unbeatable; even with the cutting edge being where it is. I could see us using these for years to come just because of the portability!
