Proper cushioning and support are key to an injury free hiking trip. Whether you’re out for the day, or spending a few weeks backpacking mountainous trails, support and cushioning will help prevent injuries like rolled ankles, and lessen joint aching. Plus, an insole that fits your foot will keep blisters at bay over long miles. With the needs of an athlete in mind, Superfeet has designed a line of insoles to support feet in the most demanding circumstances.
I tested the Green Superfeet, which are designed for maximum support and shock absorption and ideal for a medium to high arched foot. Superfeet carries more than 10 models of insoles designed for everything from soccer to skiing. They also offer custom fit insoles, so whatever your foot type or activity you are sure to find something for you. Since Superfeet provide a firm footbed, it may take some time for your feet to adjust to their shape and support - it took me about four days to be completely comfortable wearing them all day long.
On a rainy day hike in the Cascade Mountains the Superfeet preformed well. Despite scrambling over steep muddy slopes, rocks and roots, at the end of the day my feet were happy. Superfeet’s shape and volume felt stable in the heel, supportive through the arch, and while it felt roomy did not allow my foot to slip around within my shoe to cause hot spots or blisters. Once home, they dried faster than my shoes did.
Superfeet slip in and out of your shoes quickly, making it easy to swap them to my hiking boots for a five day trip to Lake Tahoe’s Desolation Wilderness. Wearing a pack puts additional stress on your knees and lower body, and Superfeet earned their keep. They didn’t feel soft or squishy when pounding down a hard slope, but after several days my step felt springy and my arches weren’t aching.
My search for foot comfort has taken me through several kinds of insoles including custom orthotics, but the insoles in my shoes today are Superfeet. They provide comfort and support both on and off the trail for a very reasonable price.
