Sherpas work on a rock altar constructed in base camp. The west shoulder of Everest is on the left, the lower Khumbu Icefall in the middle and Nuptse is on the right. No Sherpa will climb on the mountain without first conducting a puja, a Buddhist ceremony to ask the Gods for permission to tread in their heights. The altar is tended to throughout the expedition.
