Spanish Team Summits Nanga Parbat
Skardu, Northern Pakistan

August 13, 1999

Temperature: 78°F, overcast skies. “Little Karim,” a local Balti guide and climber from Hushe Village, informed me that three Spanish climbers summited Nanga Parbat in early August. He received the news from Sabastien Aleuardo, a Spanish film producer with the team. Aleuardo has made several documentaries about climbers and culture in the Karakoram for Spanish television over the last 15 years.

The Spanish ascent of Nanga Parbat completes a local alpine club’s quest to summit all five 8,000-meter peaks in Pakistan: K2 (8,611 meters), Nanga Parbat (8,125 meters), Gasherbrum I (8,068 meters) Broad Peak (8,047 meters) and Gasherbrum II (8,035 meters).
