Hello Mountain Zone. This is Greg and I am calling to tell you about the missing Austrian climbers.
I am quoting from a Pakistani newspaper called the News. The report was dispatched today, Friday, July 30th 1999, and I quote:
No Trace of Missing Austrian Climbers
IslamabadTwo Austrian climbers missing after an avalanche on Deron Peak, in northern Pakistan, four days ago, remain untraced Thursday, despite searches by helicopter. "No trace has been found as of yet of the climbers," managing director of Karakoram Treks and Tours, Mr. Ali Merza told AFP. Merza, whose firm is handling the expedition, named the missing climbers as the team leader Michael Koblmuller and Andreas Fisher. "A woman from the tenmember Austrian expedition 44yearold Rosemary Haller who sustained a leg injury in the avalanche was brought to the northern town of Gilgit Wednesday from the mountain," he said. "The team abandoned its attempt to scale the 7,266m Deron Peak after the incident and the other members will reach Gilgit on Friday." (AFP)
