Expedition Politics
September 21, 1999

The four commercial groups on Cho Oyu have circulated the following letter to the other expeditions on the mountain (this includes two Korean, two Japanese, two French, one Spanish):

IGO-8000
International Guiding Operators-8000
B.P. 12
74400 Les Praz
Chamoniz
FRANCE

19.9.1999

TO: CHO OYU EXPEDITION MEMBERS

Two years ago several of the commercial operators who run expeditions to 8000-meter peaks formed IGO-8000. This association of concerned operators want to ensure that clients are well-informed of the relevant dangers of climbing 8000m peaks. They also are very concerned with the safety of clients and also the impact of commercial expeditions on the environment.

Currently, four of the eight founding members of IGO-8000 are operating on Cho Oyu this season. They are:

Adventure Consultants (New Zealand) International Mountain Guides (USA) Himalayan Experience (France) Himalayan Guides (United Kingdom)

These four operators have established the current route and fixed rope on the mountain this season. In past seasons, we have asked other teams to contribute towards the fixed rope in money, manpower, or material. However, due to much criticism and our concern for the environment, we have decided not to ask for any assistance for the installation of the fixed ropes. All teams are welcome to use the ropes at their own responsibility, but please be warned that we have full intention of removing all the ropes upon completion of our expeditions, regardless of where other teams may be positioned at the time. This could be any time after 26th September.

If you feel that your team may be on the mountain during or after the time of removal please make your own arrangements for your own fixed ropes and safety. For your own information and planning you are most welcome to discuss the removal dates with any of the IGO-8000 expeditions leaders, who will be more than happy to help you.

Thanks for your understanding and safe climbing.

Yours sincerely,

Russell Brice
President
International Guiding Operators-8000
