Bio:
Shawn O'Fallon
Equipment Coordinator and Climber Anchorage, AK Age: 35
The 35-year-old O'Fallon guides twice a year on Denali for Mountain Trip,
based in Anchorage, Alaska, where he lives. He also works at Alaska
Mountaineering and Hiking, a climbing store. He grew up in West Yellowstone,
Montana, and then graduated from the University of Arizona at Tucson with a
degree in molecular biology. He also did some graduate work there, and worked
at universities and a private company as a molecular biologist, genetic
engineer, and pre-clinical pharmacologist seeking out effective anti-cancer
drugs. Starting in Arizona, his focus turned to climbing, and for 18 years
his trips have taken him throughout the West, including to Half Dome's
Northwest Face and El Capitan's The Nose. In the Sierras, he has climbed
extensively, and in Alaska he has been on seven Denali expeditions and to
many lesser peaks. He also has reached the summit of Aconcagua.
O'Fallon is
an avid reader, having been through 18 books in one 35-day Denali season
alone. As for 8,000 meter peaks, K2 is the sole, big one that captivates him,
due to the allure and difficulty. He has been married for 10 years, and he and
his wife, Michele, have a nearly 2-year-old daughter and another girl on the
way due in September, just after the expedition ends.
