The Finish

The Southern Traverse
As the final few teams cross the finish line at Mapua and the 1999 Southern Traverse winds down, the teams catch-up on some much needed rest and relaxation before getting ready for tonight's post-race party.

Team 26 Alleged athletes crossed the finish line On Friday morning at 04:31:00 in 16th place. Following was the women's only team untouchedworld.com (12) who came through Tapawera (Checkpoint 21) at 23:01 looking "tired and spaced out." The team's arrival was delayed due to a much needed sleep stop at the side of the road, however they held strong and crossed the finish line at 06:14:00 in 17th place overall and the last to finish the entire course as a complete team.

EMA Brazil and the Aliens came in early this morning, via Short 2, a shortened course that skipped the rafting and Mt. Owen mountain trek sections, rather an extended mountain biking section from St. Arnaud to Mapua. Japanese team Ocean Brothers (50) were the final team to cross the finish line, finishing via the alternative course at 10:30 this morning.

The atmosphere at the finish line was a mixture of excitement and relief as the teams relaxed at the beachfront Boatshed Café, eventually drinking and eating the place dry. Under the light of a full moon the teams reflected on the frustration and ecstasy when it was all over, and served as a satisfying warm up to tonight's prize giving celebrations at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson.
