The National Championships of the Hi-Tec Adventure Racing Series brought nearly 1,000 athletes to the shores of Castaic Lake, making this the largest adventure race in the world.
Foggy FirstsNew York, NY: October 17, 1999
The ninth Hi-Tec race sent 900 hundred racers into the deep fog of Orchard Beach, New York on Sunday. With fog-related changes and surprises in the course, competitors also found themselves battling for the win in the closest finish of the year.

Pittsburgh, PA: October 3, 1999
In their first race as a team, Team Toy Soldiers/Phil's Bar snagged the victory, edging out last year's defending champion, Team Nature's Garden, at Moraine State Park, PA, birthplace of the Hi-Tec Adventure Race Series.
Out of the Mud to Victory
Hartford, CT: September 12, 1999
Team Balance Bar claimed its fourth win out of seven events so far in the latest Hi-Tec Adventure race in Hartford, CT. This event demanded teamwork as racers paddled with kayaks tied together and pedaled with three team members on only two mountain bikes.

Team Balance Bar swept Sunday's Hi-Tec Adventure Race at Folsom Lake, near Sacramento, California, pulling a 300-pound railroad tie across the finish line a full 10 minutes before their competition.

Racers Hand-Dipped in Red Clay Atlanta, GA: June 27, 1999
There were nine special tests in this race. Making its debut was "The Meat Grinder." Rules require a team member be on each side of the apparatus, one to boost and one to spot on the other side, to avoid pile driving somebody's head in the ground..
Miami Endorphins Miami, FL: June 6, 1999
June temperatures climbed toward 90 with a humidity rating at 70+ percent in Miami where teams ran and biked over the flat lands and kayaked where fresh meets salt near the coastline.
Cactus on the Track Phoenix, AZ: May 23, 1999
140 teams biked, swam and kayaked through Hi-Tec's first adventure race of the season. In 90° desert-dry heat in Lake Pleasant, Arizona, barely a competitor escaped the painful wraith of the jumping cholla cactus.
