Salomon X-Adventure
X-adventure

The teams aren't the only ones on this race adventure. Thirty-five local volunteers from all over Colorado are also trekking into the woods and taking on the back roads.

Take retired couple Sam Riggs and his wife, Lois. After the Denver residents heard race organizer Liz Caldwell, of MountainQuest Adventures, speak at their local REI, the couple signed on to spend the weekend with Salomon X-adventure.

The couple, who are outdoor enthusiasts, are now part of the five-team crew who work around the clock with the 15-person race production team from Saga d'Adventures to mark the course, assist racers throughout the race, and keep the racers safe during their 143-mile trek.

What exactly does the husband-and-wife team do on the course? They help set up and tear down the transition points. They left before dawn this morning to get the assistance points up and running well before the first teams arrived, and they will stay till the last team makes it through — often long after the last onlooker has departed.

According to Riggs, volunteers also keep the official times for each race section. They man the passport checkpoints throughout the 36-hour race and shuttle themselves and race organizers around the course.

"I'm having a great time," said Sam Riggs, at assistance point C. "I've even learned the course in French — and I don't speak French! We dropped one volunteer off this morning before it was light; she's up at a cabin mid-course. She was armed with two books and looked forward to catching up on her reading in between the team arrivals."

As Riggs headed off to his new location on the course, his parting words were, "See you later on the course!"
