Eco-Challenge Announces the Armed Forces Eco-Challenge
The First World Qualifier
06 SEP 2000

Anchorage, Alaska –– It was announced today by Eco-Challenge Lifestyles, Inc. that out of 250 applicants, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) was awarded the first franchise of Eco-Challenge, the world's toughest Expedition Race.

TAPS, a national non-profit organization made up of, and providing services to, all those who have lost a loved one while serving in the Armed Forces, will host the first annual Armed Forces Eco-Challenge in Alaska. At midnight, on the Summer Solstice, highly trained teams representing all branches of the US active and reserve forces will begin an around-the-clock Expedition Race.

Mark Burnett, Founder and Executive Producer of Eco-Challenge said, "The Eco-Challenge brand has been developed carefully and steadily over the last eight years. Therefore we took careful consideration when nominating TAPS as our first franchise. TAPS was chosen because they have the important ingredients to maintain the Eco-Challenge integrity, a passion for adventure, good business acumen and a positive social message. We will provide them with our experience in order to put on a very successful and safe Eco-Challenge."

Armed Forces Eco-Challenge will benefit America's only non-profit national program dedicated solely to providing support to families who have recently lost a loved one while serving in the Armed Forces.

"It is in honor of all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country, and for their surviving families, that the men and women of America's Armed Forces are rising to the ultimate Eco-Challenge," says Bonnie Carroll, TAPS founder and president.

The team who wins the Armed Forces Eco-Challenge will be awarded a coveted slot in the Eco-Challenge 2001 race.
