Speed on the Grand Traverse
05 SEP 2000

On August 26, Rolando Garibotti soloed the Grand Traverse of the Tetons in a record six hours, 40 minutes. Jimmy Chin, who has done the traverse, said, "That's full-on running to achieve that time." The previous record holder was the late Alex Lowe, who clocked in at eight hours, 15 minutes in 1991.

The traverse enchains Teewinot, Mt. Owen, the Grand Teton, the Middle Teton, the South Teton, Coudveil Dome and Nez Perce, with loose 4th class ridge scrambling and technical difficulties up to 5.8. A fit climber would normally take six to eight hours, roundtrip, just to do Teewinot.

Garibotti, an Argentinean currently residing in Boulder, Colorado, guides for Exum Mountain Guides. While shunning the spotlight, he is well known for his swift ascents of El Capitan and his hard climbing in Patagonia.
